Return on savings accounts

The interest rate on a savings account comprises a basic rate and a loyalty bonus, both of which may vary depending on market conditions.

Basic rate:

This is the interest you receive on every amount you deposit into your savings account. Your money earns interest for every day it remains in your account, starting on the calendar day after the deposit is made. You receive the basic rate on 1 January each year (or when the account is closed).

Loyalty bonus:

You receive a loyalty bonus on every deposit that remains in your savings account for an uninterrupted period of 12 consecutive months. Any loyalty bonuses you receive then generate interest in turn. The loyalty bonus is paid on the first day following the end of the quarter in which it vests (1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October), or when the account is closed.

The loyalty bonus may fluctuate, but is guaranteed for the entire vesting period. What does this mean? If you deposit €100 into your savings account on 10 September 2026, then 12 months later, on 11 September 2027, you will receive the loyalty bonus on that €100 at the applicable rate on 10 September 2026, whether or not the loyalty bonus has changed in the meantime. A new 12-month vesting period will then begin. The applicable loyalty bonus will be the rate in effect at the time of renewal, in this case on 11 September 2027. It may therefore differ from the rate that applied during the previous period.

If you withdraw money from your savings account before the end of the 12-month vesting period, you will forfeit the loyalty bonus on the withdrawn amount.

The basic rate and loyalty bonus may change at any time depending on market conditions. Customers will be informed of any changes via their account statements.

Risks associated with savings accounts

Insolvency risk:

Funds deposited in savings accounts with BNP Paribas Fortis are covered by the deposit protection scheme up to a maximum of €100,000 per person. In the event of the bank’s insolvency or imminent insolvency, savers run the risk of not recovering their savings. Savers may also be required to write down claims against the financial institution that exceed €100,000, which are not covered by the deposit protection scheme, or to convert them into shares (‘bail-in’).

Inflation risk:

Persistent price increases may erode the value of deposited funds.

Withholding tax

The bank does not deduct withholding tax from the interest on your regulated savings account provided that the interest does not exceed the annual tax-free amount of €1,020 (2026 income). For a savings account opened in the names of two married or legally cohabiting persons, the bank does not deduct withholding tax provided that the interest does not exceed twice this amount, i.e. €2,040 (2026 income).

If you are a Belgian tax resident, you must check each year the total amount of interest attributable to you on regulated savings accounts from which the banks have not deducted withholding tax. This includes interest attributable to you under your matrimonial property regime or other applicable property arrangements, as well as any interest from accounts held by your minor children to which you are legally entitled. If that amount exceeds the annual tax-free amount of €1,020 per taxpayer (assuming residence in Belgium throughout the entire income year), you must declare the excess in your personal income tax return. The non-exempt portion of your interest is subject to 15% withholding tax.

Costs associated with savings accounts

The Boost Savings Account (Cat. B)* is free of charge, except for any postage costs incurred when account statements are sent by post. An annual fee of €2.50 will be charged if the balance on the savings account is less than €25 and no withdrawals or deposits have been made for 10 years. This only applies to account holders aged 24 or over who do not hold any other accounts with BNP Paribas Fortis, Hello bank! or Fintro.

You must read the ‘Essential Information for Savers’ document before opening a Boost Savings Account (Cat. B)*. This document, together with the new terms and conditions, will be available on the website from 1 September 2026.

The Boost Savings Account (Cat. B)* from BNP Paribas Fortis, Fintro and Hello bank! is governed by Belgian law. The account is opened for an indefinite period. Deposits are limited to a maximum of €500 (excluding interest) per month and per account.

(Cat. B)* account: this is a regulated savings account to which certain conditions apply. For example, there may be a limit on the maximum amount that can be held in the account or on the maximum amount that can be deposited into the account each month.
